The second season of The Last of Us will feature changes to the timeline

One of the most anticipated sequels of 2025, the second season of The Last of Us has generated a lot of excitement among fans eager to see the adaptation of Part II of the game.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Neil Druckmann shared some details about the series, revealing that the timeline will be slightly different from the one portrayed in the game.

“A big part of the theme of the second game is perspective, how someone’s hero can be another person’s villain, and vice versa. It’s strange to talk about a story whose structure could be a spoiler,” said Druckmann. “I’m not even sure if it’s worth mentioning where we’ve gotten because I think that’s part of the fun for people familiar with the game—seeing how we approach this challenge in the show. I’ll just say that we’ve thought a lot about it and tried different things. There are some deviations in where we’ve placed things.”

With 7 episodes, the second season of The Last of Us promises changes to the timeline.

Regardless of how the changes were made, the show’s co-creator, Craig Mazin, explains that everything was altered appropriately for the show. “At the very least, we’re definitely going to play with time the way it was in the source material, but as Neil said, we’ve changed things in ways that we think are appropriate for the show. When I say ‘played with,’ I mean scientifically determined, in a narrative way, what we think would be most impactful,” said Mazin.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to know exactly what Druckmann and Mazin are referring to. After all, those who played The Last of Us Part II are well aware of the death of a character. The question remains how this character’s fate will be adapted for the series.

With 7 episodes, the second season of The Last of Us premieres in April 2025 on Max and promises intense emotions. “We have seven episodes. They’re dense and high in emotional content. If you consider action, drama, and scope as the elements that create an epic nature, each of these episodes packs a punch. You won’t get bored.”

“Each episode is like a meal. You can have a light dinner or go to a 12-course French restaurant,” said Mazin.

Although HBO has not yet given the green light, there are plans for The Last of Us series to extend beyond three seasons. “I think it’s very likely that our story will stretch beyond a third season,” said Mazin. “How far? I can’t say. And that doesn’t mean there aren’t other stories that could be told, but this story is the one Neil and I are telling.”
